ABAS PRODUCTIONS

Sound & Video Production Company

If it can be filmed
We can capture it for you

ABAS Productions is the sound and video arm of Matthew Brown Photography and provides highly competitively priced, efficient, and top-quality audio-visual capture services, ranging from product videos in his studio to location shoots and producing music videos.

He is based out of a state-of-the-art studio in Alvechurch, Worcestershire just south of Birmingham, within the premises of his family's business, the gunmaking firm A.A.Brown & Sons. This gave Matt a unique opportunity to become one of the world's most respected firearms photographers, and naturally, he turned his attention to videos.

Photographing a firearm is one of the greatest challenges due to the complexity of the different surfaces and the fine detail of the engraving and so the skills learned working with them are highly transferable. Matt has also been a lifelong musician and music producer and again, these skills are hugely useful when putting together films.

Matt has found all his talents and passions have come together in filmmaking and he has seen a steady move toward video over still photography in recent years, sparking his decision to make this website and make videography his focus.

Please take a look at the examples of Matt's work below and by all means, reach out for advice and guidance on how best to move forward for any future projects.

Services

Of course Matt can take on full productions. It is usually the case that he is taken on to film, record the sound, edit and even provide a original music so as to deliver a fully completed project. There are a lot of advantages to this, notably cost and vision, that well known David Bowie song!

By having an 8K camera, Matt is able to crop and zoom on that footage to make it appear as though many more cameras were used. By having a second camera on a tripod and a third camera operated on a gimbal, even a live action event can have what seems like five 4K resolution camera angles with only one operator and so only one operator to pay. Of course, if more operators are needed for the project Matt can provide them.

Additionally, when Matt knows he will be the one to edit the film he can make certain allowances during the shoot that will favour his style and workflow, so as to maximise efficiency and once again, reduce costs.

If you would like Matt to take on your next project or to discuss how best to achieve what you are after, then please do get in touch.

It is regular practice when budgets allow to have a different person on each specific task and to that end, Matt can find himself as the cameraman on a shoot that will be edited by somebody else. His understanding of what is needed on the day is fuelled by the knowledge of how he would want things to be if he were the editor and so he always provides his footage in whatever format the client requires and in a timely fashion.

His time spent as a photographer means Matt is always likely to notice small details and this is a great trait to have a cameraman as you can be sure no action will be missed. You will always be provided with enough footage and different angles to be sure the editor will have an easy time. Matt has a vast array of exceptionally high quality lenses so the footage will look as clean and beautiful as you could possibly want.

If you would like to use Matt as a cameraman on your next project then please do get in touch.

As mentioned in the filming section, it is regular practice when budgets allow to have a different person on each specific task and to that end, Matt can find himself as the editor on some projects when he was not the one to have filmed the footage. Naturally, Matt has access to all the most up to date software to allow edits on footage from any source and has even been known to do edits on phone footage. He has a large professional and regularly calibrated monitor to work from so you can be sure all your shots will match in colour and tone, even when using multiple cameras.

His background in music gives him a natural rhythm when it comes to the timing of clips and he is particularly good at finding the more touching moments and giving emotional depth to a film. He is able to tie in the motion with a fitting soundtrack to allow for tensions to build and release, giving clear high points wherever possible, even when dealing with inanimate objects.

If you would like to use Matt to edit your next project then please do get in touch.

Matt has had a lifetime working and playing around music and he set himself up as a music producer over 20 years ago to facilitate recording his own compositions. He was lucky enough to get signed by a small label at 24 years old which gave him access to a huge recording studio with an SSL 4000 G console and a fantastic engineer that taught him a huge amount over his couple of years with the label. He has continued to record bands and himself and has sound treated his photographic studio to allow it to function as a video and recording studio as well.

Naturally, his understanding of sound and music is so useful when producing videos as the two are so intrinsically linked, but of course you can employ Matt to help you with sound without the need to use either his photo or video services as well, so do get in contact should you need any sound production help or advice.

Videos

First off, here is the ABAS Productions promotional roll
On location filming: This is the most recent filming job of many for the Youth Sport Trust. A highly enjoyable project meeting young inspirational people changing their lives through sport. These involve multiple interviews on site, often with poor acoustics and B-roll of activities and facilities. All filmed in the highest quality with top grade lenses and a stabilised gimbal for the action shots.
Studio based production: This is the most recent video for Boss & Co gunmakers, a long standing photographic client who have now realised the power of video. This short film shows how this particular shotgun can have its lever mounted to either side of the gun and have two sets of barrels. By filming the sequences in 8K, Matt was able to do two run throughs on his powered turntable with the lever on different sides and then zoom and rotate the video during editing guaranteeing perfect positioning and yet, still deliver the final film in 4K. The music used here was also composed and recorded by Matt.
Music/band promo editing: This is the promo video for the tribute band Run in the Shadow, of which Matt is a member. Being a member meant he had to use outside help for the filming and the guys at Mockingbird Film Co provided four cameras to roam around. However, the wide angle shot was Matt's 8K camera and edited all the footage and he was able to use the 8K footage to give a very wide shot with the audience visible and yet zoom quite close in to the action, saving the need for an extra two operators. The dry audio was from each instrument was recorded from the sound desk and Matt produced and mixed the whole two hour show, clips from which make up this promo reel. There are full songs from the show available as well and The Chain is one of the videos below.
Studio based production: This is one of many films of lighting products for LAP Electrical taken by Matt over the last few years. This one utilises the 8K camera to allow for precise framing during editing and the motorised turntable to give smooth rotation to the object. The captions are added during the edit and the music is a piece composed and recorded by Matt that now serves as LAP Electrical's theme.
Studio based band video: This one is a very interesting project as Dance District were a start up band looking to get into the party and wedding market, but had no material to use at all. They employed Matt to take their photos, build a website, record some tracks and put together a basic video so they could start getting work. This session was mostly to record them performing, but the decision was made to kill two birds with one stone and so the 8K camera was deployed. All these shots were from a static camera set up on a tripod as Matt was having to pay more attention to the recording. Due to the high resolution of the footage, Matt was able to crop in, zoom and pan during the edit to make it look as though multiple cameras were used and operated in the usual way. This kept costs down exceptionally for a band that had not yet earned any money and now they are in full swing, with a new video of a live performance planned early in the new year.
On location filming: Another filming job for the Youth Sport Trust, a highly enjoyable project meeting young inspirational people changing their lives through sport. These involve multiple interviews on site, often with poor acoustics and B-roll of activities and facilities. All filmed in the highest quality with top grade lenses and a stabilised gimbal for the action shots.
Studio based music video: This has been included as another example of 8K recording and it's potential uses as this video features Matt in his studio performing a song in his role as the Lindsey Buckingham in the Fleetwood Mac tribute 'Run in the Shadow'. He recorded and mixed the song first and then did a number of mimed runs through the track with the camera in different positions. The pans and zooms were then added when editing the footage.
On location filming: A film showing the lovely Wednesday evening sailing at Barnt Green Sailing Club and a film that utilises 120 frames per second 4K footage to allow some very smooth slow motion scenes at four times slower than real time. It also highlights the power of a gimbal on a stick as all this footage was taken from a motor boat following the sailors which was far from stable. A long monopod extension on the gimbal allows for elevation changes and more precise positioning beyond that of the movement of the boat. 120fps footage can be captured in 8K as well to give a huge range of options in editing when it comes to framing and footage speed.
Music video editing: As promised, here is a full version of The Chain performed by Run in the Shadow where Matt served as the editor and provided an 8K wide angle shot. It is also worth noting that the banner name behind the band was added in editing as the band have the show name 'Dreams of FM' which needs to be in the background for the show promo and so either can be chosen with this method.
